In Switzerland, a number of cantons already oblige older pupils to wear masks and each canton is responsible for its own policy. Those children under twelve are not affected at all by a mask wearing rule at school because of the low transmission risk and because they are not seen as a driver of the pandemic.

14.10.2020 – Canton Issues Updated Safety Measures For Coronavirus – COVID-19

The Cantonal Authorities and Council have become concerned about the sudden rise in transmission and seek to adapt current control measures. The new rules specifically relate to catering establishments, clubs and events.

Obligation to wear masks in restaurants, bars and clubs and an update for events

After a temporary stabilisation, a further increase in the number of cases can currently be observed in the canton of Zurich. In order to prevent an overload of the contact tracing system, measures are necessary to slow down the spread of the coronavirus.

The measures taken so far do not seem to be able to contain the infection sufficiently under the given circumstances. For this reason, an adjustment of the measures is necessary, at least temporarily.

Obligation to wear masks in restaurants, bars and clubs

In restaurants and bars where consumption is not exclusively seated, as well as in clubs, discotheques and dance halls, the wearing of masks is now generally mandatory indoors. These establishments are the subject of major outbreaks and clustering.

Masks are known to reduce the risk of transmission and now to avoid the increased transmission risk arising from multiple contact between staff or guests, all staff and guests or service personnel in all catering establishments are now required to wear masks from today.

Obligation to wear masks at events

For events with more than 30 people, it is now mandatory to wear masks indoors if the minimum distances cannot be maintained. This is a reduction from the 100 person limit for inside only and locations with shared indoor and outdoor use with more than 300 persons. It is a temporary measure designed to reduce the risk of transmission.

The amendment to the Ordinance on Measures to Combat the Covid 19 Epidemic comes into force on 15 October.

The Ordinance continues to apply until 31 October.

As of October 1, the Council extends the measures to contain the COVID-19 epidemic, which have been in force since August 27, 2020, with some adjustments:

In catering establishments, bars and clubs, up to 300 people can now be present indoors, provided they wear masks.

The prostitution industry will now have to record the contact details of clients.

Masks are mandatory in all indoor areas of stores, shopping centers and markets.

Registration of contact data in restaurants and bars remains mandatory.

For events with more than 100 persons indoors or more than 300 persons in the entire indoor and outdoor area, strict regulations still apply: events can only be held if the required distance of 1.5 meters can be maintained or if face masks are worn.

Simply recording the contact data is not enough
