2020 Zurich unemployment and job cuts

August 2020 Unemployment News and Company Job Cuts Switzerland Report

The latest employment figures show that 85,000 fewer people are employed now than at the same time in 2019. This is the biggest year on year decline since 1993. The second quarter federal labour statistics late August show a 1.6% reduction in employed people in Switzerland compared with this time last year. The drop was slightly higher for women than for men (1.7% and 1.5% respectively). Those in partial unemployment are not classified as out of work, in the statistics. The over 50 long-term unemployed and those off the RAV register seeking work are also not included. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) said weekly hours per employed person fell by 9.5% in this period and there is a gender imbalance as more women were impacted. 223,000 people are now unemployed – that’s 17,000 more than 2019. Young people (15-24 years old) were particularly affected by the crisis: while the unemployment rate for the whole population climbed from 4.2% to 4.6%, it increased from 6.2% to 8.4% for this segment. Between the second quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020, the number of employed Swiss nationals fell by 2.4%, however when residents with permits are reviewed, there were some

Corona Virus Zurich Update

Zurich Facemask Wearing Update and Mandatory in Shops

Zurich follows Basel as the second German-speaking canton to require customers to wear face masks in shops and shopping centres due to the spread of the new coronavirus. The new rule is effective in Zurich from August 27. It was expected because it already applies in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and  Neuchâtel in the French-speaking regions. A rise in cases in recent weeks meant the seven-day rolling average for Switzerland reached 257.4 new cases per day, a 19% increase from the previous week. The canton of Zurich is currently the worst-affected region – a 27% increase from the previous week as the virus spreads rapidly amongst those aged below 40 years of age. In addition to the face masks in shops, Zurich restaurants will be obliged to collect customers’ contact details to assist with tracing. Name and phone number will be collected which in some ways is great news for marketeers who can add these clients into a CRM system for later follow-up. Stricter measures have also been introduced for clubs, bars and restaurants, where a 100-person limit will be tolerated for inside. Larger events and gatherings are possible for up to 300 people, but only with social distancing

27 Sep 2020 Popular Initiative Immigration Vote

27-Sept-20 Zurich votes on tax, maternity pay, defence, conservation

Contents Upcoming Vote September 27 In Switzerland a number of key votes were stalled because of COVID-19 and the impact of coronavirus. This means there are some very important votes which are upcoming and “off the radar” for many non-Swiss. Popular initiative ‘For moderate immigration (Limitation Initiative)’ Yes, you read that correctly. The right of free movement of persons applies between Switzerland and the member states of the European Union (EU). It allows EU citizens to live, work and study in Switzerland, subject to certain requirements, while Swiss citizens can do the same in the EU. The Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) is one of the seven bilateral agreements that Switzerland and the EU have negotiated as a package known as Bilaterals I. Bilaterals I gives Swiss businesses direct access to the European market. This measure was successfully proposed by the SVP ( well known for its racist posters which shock visitors and international non-Swiss residents ) and other minor parties. Should the vote be successful, it will act as a break clause on other agreements. If the AFMP is terminated, the other six agreements automatically cease to apply (by virtue of what is known as a

July 2020 Covid-19 Unemployment Rate and Impact on Switzerland

Inform others and share Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on linkedin LinkedIn 08.08.2020 – ZURICH The Corona crisis and the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to dominate the Swiss labour market as unemployment remains well above 2019 figures for the summer of 2019. Job seekers are seeing some movement with new hiring increasing in July above the number hired in June. The recorded unemployment for July 2020 was a total of 148,870 people who were out of work. This compares to 97,578 registered unemployed for July 2019. That number is 1419 fewer than in June and “Kurzarbeit” (Swiss government supported employment scheme for short-time working) has enabled many to keep their jobs for the moment. The unemployment rate remains close to 3.2% which is still better than predicted during the height of the pandemic in April and May. Zurich has a problem, just like elsewhere in Switzerland because the unemployment issue affects the over-45s and the young disproportionately. Youngsters leaving school seeking an apprenticeship are struggling to find one, in 2019 it was easier and school-leavers are also struggling. In 2019 unemployment for the young was almost half with only c.300 young adults without work.
